You make it to the open doorway and try to glance inside. The door is open but the light is off and all you can see is the faint outline of the kitchen counter. Whatever the sounds were, they seem to have stopped.
“I’ve got a knife!” you shout, taking a tentative step forward and fumbling for the light switch. There is the delayed buzz of the fluorescence starter and then the room floods with light.
The room is empty. It’s your kitchen, exactly how you left it. Baffled, sweating, and feeling a surge of relief, you take a moment to catch your breath. Then, you remember the jacket.
