Welcome to another edition of Foto Friday. This time, I thought I’d share images of a location recently featured in the popular TV series The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, where it is referred to as “The Nest.”
Now, I will not review the TV show or comment on its quality. I do, however, think that the location is an excellent choice, albeit most of the scenes inside are shot at a different castle, no doubt out of practical and monetary reasons. But enough of Zombie TV Shows. Let’s revisit this fantastic place.
We booked a room at a small hotel within walking distance, as the places inside Mont Saint-Michel are a bit pricey. Plus, the walk was nice. More opportunities for photos and sheep.
Mont Saint-Michel1 has been photographed countless times, named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1979, visited by over three million visitors and pilgrims yearly, and is undoubtedly one of the most famous tourist locations in France. Have you been?
At low tide you can walk around, but always consult the tide schedules, or best take a guide if you want to do one of the longer walks.
There are many stairs to climb to reach the top, so make sure you are prepared. Trekking shoes are recommended, although you’ll see people in high heels and flip-flops. Shrug.
I took many interior shots, and there’s much to see, aside from all the shops and restaurants. Here’s an image from inside the abbey.
As mentioned before, you can do guided walks at low tide and marvel at the place as these tiny humans do.
We spent the whole day there, had a late delicious lunch with an unbeatable view, and left just before sunset as I wanted to do a wide angle shot from a distance. The photo below shows the light bridge2 built in 2014. It was around 9 pm and I wanted to be back at the spot from where I took the first photo before sunset.
And we made it just in time. The sheep were gone already.
Light is fading fast in these final minutes of the day. People hurry by, eyeing my tripod and camera with open curiosity, some stop to chat, many take their phones point and snap, thinking this must be a good spot to take a memorable image from the place they just had come from. Maybe it is.
The sun has set, yet I keep snapping pictures. We’re alone now. No more tourists swarm by. My son and wife are getting bored. I plead for another minute. The light is just too good to leave. Look!
Thus ends another day at Mont Saint-Michel. I hope you found the brief visit appealing. Let me know in the comments below.
The next and last (for this year) Foto Friday will come on December 6th.
Next week, we’ll return to Brae in the penultimate Episode 8, “Spoon” of The Man Who Wouldn’t Die.

In July 2014, the new bridge, by architect Dietmar Feichtinger, was opened to the public. The light bridge allows waters to flow freely around the island and improves the efficiency of the now-operational dam. The bridge, which cost €209 million, was opened by President François Hollande.
Wonderful wonderful shots and location. I've never been, although Jo desperately wanted to go when we were last in Paris. I had a conference, though, and there sadly wasn't enough time to get there and back.
It's on the list!
This is such a magical place and I love your photos of it! We learned about it from our French teachers in school and I took a road trip 20 years ago while living in Paris. Did not disappoint! Like something from a magical world…
