I know it's just a phone, but the purple is very nice. Once had a tie which showed the moon, and its reflection in water - thrift store find, Japanese perhaps? Favorite of all time. Nice work, A!

Thanks, Troy! Once had? Where is it now? And yes, I’m quite partial to the deep purple myself. phone or not. Cheers!

I think it went back to a thrift shop, actually, once I stopped having to wear ties to work ;)

So someone out there is sporting a purple moon tie right now maybe! ;)

Thanks, Kate. On June 21 we can both snap pics with our phones of the Strawberry Moon! (9:08 p.m. EST / 01:08 GMT on June 22)

Lovely shots, Alexander. Always so impressed by your photography skills.

I also really like the shot of the actual camera setup. There's something about the path and context there that really appeals.

Hmm, not sure what moon-based stories I have. Nothing overly specific comes to mind right now, though my brain did default to your Still Water story :D

Thanks, Nathan. I like doing pano shots with the phone, it’s quick. Did a wider one too, with the path on both sides.

Good choice for a moon story! 😀

Wow, such sublime photographs! I could observe the moon forever and hope it doesn't stare back, or maybe I do.

Thank you, Nadia. Tomorrow we'll have a Strawberry full moon! Let's snap some pics! Although... it is highly likely I will be fast asleep by then. Glad you like the shots.

What a great shot of the moon! Unfortunately all I can see is the smooth glass surface of the water and im reminded of my time as a sports editor in the late 20th century (lol) when doing an interview with a small business in Stockbridge, Mass (home of the late Norman Rockwell) that did sculling in the early morning. This photo really brought that back so thanks for posting (even if i take my own story away and ignore the moon). I love the idea of turning photographs into stories or finding the right image to match a theme. Anyway, rambling and realizing I miss my days of taking photographs, not digitally but on film, or with chrome slides, back in the very early aughts, and staying at the office to develop and head over to a small bar/music club (underage at the time…dont tell) to be part of the culture…and now im wondering if i can find that story i wrote about the sculling in the early morning….oh yeah, thanks again for the moon shot…i definitely derailed there….

It's fascinating how memories are triggered! Thanks for sharing this. I love how stories are inspired or resurface just by looking at a picture. If you miss taking pictures, then there's an easy fix! Strawberry Moon is on June 21st! Let's all take images and share afterwards. I do agree about the days when I shot analog, bw film and developed myself, I recently found old ilford paper and tossed it since I don't have a lab anymore. One of these days, I think, I have to go back and do a little bw analog film shooting...

Do let me know if you find that story about the sculling. And thanks for reading/viewing, Brian.

I love shooting the moon! One of my favorite moon-shots is one I captured while on a short trip to Albuquerque, New Mexico (The same city that has an amazing, really hot air balloon festival - I hope to attend someday).

Thanks, David. You have the shot posted somewhere? On Notes? 🌕

Also, get ready for the Strawberry moon this month! (https://www.space.com/16830-full-moon-calendar.html)

Thank you for sharing that full moon calendar! I know the year is nearly half over, but it would be really cool to try to photograph each full moon for the rest of the year.

I’m not certain if I’ve shared the Moon Over Albuquerque photo here yet. I need to start doing something along the lines of your FotoFriday.

Here is a link to a page I recently created to share some favorite photos: https://davidsheley.craft.me/photography

It’s currently the 11th photo from the top.

That surprisingly clear for a 105. "Only" a 105! But we know how it goes with the moon... Great photos, Alexander. What camera did you use? I used to be a little bit of a photo freak myself a while ago; no longer now. But I do follow. :)

Only 105mm! Yes :) My trusted 24-105mm, it's a real workhorse that lens. Best purchase ever.

Not long enough for proper moon shots, but budget constraints dictate I make do with what I have, which is a Canon 50D body and an assortment of lenses (35mm, 50mm, 10-22mm, 100mm Macro and the 24-105mm). Bought the camera in 2009, my first digital one, shot analog for decades before that and always wanted to upgrade to full frame but never did, and then I got too busy with other things to justify the price tag.

I was contemplating getting a mirrorless for the Indonesia trip next month but seeing the prices, I decided my 15 year old camera has to suffice, plus I will probably do more shots with my phone than with the camera... I do need to buy a new battery though.

What do you use?

Expand full comment

I was a Canon DSLR user for a long time, but some years ago I went mirrorless, and now I am a proud user of a Fujifilm XT4. Great camera. Also, I’m into street photography, mostly, and I try to always use a fixed 35mm lens.

Ah yes, 35mm is a great focal length for street and in general. I do some streetphotog, too. You might like FF15. I'm a big fan of Henri Cartier-Bresson.

As for Fujifilm, I was contemplating getting the x100vi... only problem, it's sold out everywhere. (https://fujifilm-x.com/fr-fr/products/cameras/x100vi/) So I decided to not buy a new camera, for now. But it will happen... soon.

Funny you say this. I myself have been contemplating trading in my XT4 for a X100VI!

😅 the only thing that saved me was that you can't order it anywhere. otherwise I would have it already. I think esp. for street photography it should be ideal. dpreview.com has some words and images on it.

Yeah I know it very well. It is ideal: light, feature-full, precise. It's got a fixed lens though.

Great photos, Alexander 👍🏼

Like Troy said I really like the one taken on the phone as well

As soon as you referenced Credence and Bad Moon Rising I was thinking about American Werewolf which is the ultimate “moon” movie as well as the best werewolf film ever with a great soundtrack 🌝 🐺

Thanks, Dan. Yes, indeed. Best werewolf movie of all times. I had the intro video with the Blue Moon song in there but removed it last minute.

I think I’ll have to watch it again this weekend…

Sorry, I have no moon songs or folktales to share, but one of my favorite films is Moonstruck. I have watched it so many times, I have the entire dialog memorized. "Guardate la luna, la bella luna!!" grandpa yells. In Italian the saying is "La Luna attira l'uomo alla donna. " The moon pulls the man toward the woman. I sure do admire your images, Alexander. I especially loved the purple one here. You're a fine photog.
