That dangling wisp of grey hair! Such great description.

Also, this dialogue is awesome. Love the way you weave in the German accent here. Is it particularly local at all? It's fun that you are writing between cultures in this way and writing the 'foreigner' as people where you're from originally. I've got to listen to the recording later to hear how you do this as well. Great stuff.

All we are is hair dangling in the wind...

Thanks, Kate. I did do a slight dialect, Minga would be München but that would be a bit hard to understand like in "Ein Münchner I'm Himmel" (https://youtu.be/VvdEgkqei6c?si=GlGG1_7x-19V9znZ) where the narrator speaks (kind of) High German (with a accent) and Aloisius, well, he speaks Münchnerisch. 😅

I'm gonna try to hear it... !

I really like your voiceover, Alexander!

Thanks, James! Much appreciated. Glad you liked it.

Haha. For a second I thought you'd start singing the intro, even your chapter. Well, that was an amusing and immersive experience. I love how you intoned each character's dialogue. Poor Carter. Whoever did this to him is the worst! :'(

I think at some point there has to be a musical intermezzo of sorts... As the snow flies, on a cold and grey Substack morning' a poor little guy's post is lost in the Stackverse... or some such ;)

And, well Beaumont ain't good news, those pills? And who kidnapped him now? He seems to keep getting into trouble wherever he goes, one might think Trouble follows him!

Yeaaaah! Agree! Maybe even do a commercial related to your story. Like advertise pretzels or something. Haha Samuel T. Carter is his name. Trouble, his middle name!

This line is wonderful: "... the cleanest airport toilet, so bright, so shiny, so spacious, and so empty he was expecting Händel’s Hallelujah blasting from the speakers at any moment as he was relieving himself into the pristine porcelain from the painful pressure with a deep sigh." I was standing right next to him, feeling the relief. THEN, that last line, Alexander! Oh Nooooo! SO unexpected.

😅 He really needed to go... ;) Thanks, Sharron. I had much fun writing that line and the entire piece. Glad you liked it! Where will Samuel be taken? We'll find out next week! Must write more...

We just connected on Sub so this is the first post i have read, but wow, it’s great!

Thanks a lot, Charlie! Appreciate you taking the time to read and comment. CARTER is part of a larger story. If you liked this one, you may like Part One, too. It is linked at the top of the post. Thanks again! Looking forward to more of your images!

He’s back! And he’s still got no luck! 😁

As Nathan says, never trust an empty bathroom. Particularly in an airport!

Having just got off a flight late yesterday evening, I can confirm the me-firsts are still as impatient as ever. Even when they know they’re going into buses to get to the terminal. Got to get the first bus! They are funny

Also, that pastry and beer sound ideal right about now 🥐 🍺

Great stuff, Alexander. Loved it 👍🏼

He's back and knocked out already. Poor Carter! 😅

Yes, indeed, Samuel must pay more attention to his surroundings, then again, he is a tad preoccupied with pretzels and alien hosts.

So you've encountered me-firsts in the flesh. But it is fiction! You say it is real? Then that means reality is fiction? Blue or red pill? Neither. Brezn + Weissbier!

Thanks for reading, Daniel. Happy you enjoyed it.

Love the Bavarian and Austrian vibes in this installment! 😀 And now I need a fresh-baked pretzel and frothing krug of Stiegl!

Thanks, Daniel. A bit early over here, still 1h until Weisswurst-Frühstück... 😅

Das gute Stiegl. Prost! ;)

That needs to be a paper print Alexander. I’m in the elevator of chapter one first part. Thrilled

Thanks, George! Glad you like it. I am working on the combined version (Parts 1 2 3) and once all parts are done, yes, I'd love to have it printed. :)

Wunderbar, wunderbar! Fantastic continuation (had to just remind my memory of what happened right at the end of Part 1, but then the text hinted at what had happened, so phew!)

Oh Samuel, one must always pay the utmost attention when urinating in a seemingly empty bathroom!

I chuckled a lot at the descriptions of the me-first and the me-lasts. So on point. Really love all the little details in this chapter 😊

Also, that map is great. Is that one you found, or made??

Danke, Danke! Alles wunderbar. I thought I'd best give a minimum recap of how part one ended, hinting at what happened directly afterwards and have some time pass before he's being sent off again. Too obvious, that bathroom scene eh? Telegraphed before even by the Professor... Glad you liked the airplane ritual. The map. Yep, I made it. It is a stylised version of the actual Google Map (linked in the image caption) and weirded into a mystery map. The lake exists. Very nice place. Höllensteinsee. The fictional one... well let's see!

Expand full comment

That's great. Very impressive with the map. Gives it a fantasy-like look. I followed the hyperlink to the real location on Google Maps 😁

And nah, not too obvious for the bathroom, it was a "hmm, maybe something will happen, but will it??" moment of thought, but it fits perfectly with the story and Samuel's capers so far.

Glad the map works, I almost didn't want to put it but then I thought, every great adventure needs a map.

Yep, Carter's at it again, capering from mishap to mishap... or will he?
