The Storm

You stare back out the window. The storm is getting closer. In some of the other houses you see candles being lit and wish you had some of your own. Another flash of lightning sears itself onto your retinas and you hear a noise in your apartment. Sounds like it’s coming from the kitchen. But you know you are alone. You look down and see the shadowy shape of a letter opener on your desk.

Do you grab the letter opener and investigate the noise in the kitchen, or run out into the storm?
